International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA)
Overview
Theย International Fuel Tax Agreementย (IFTA) is an arrangement among U.S. states and Canadian provinces. Taxes are paid on motor fuels, and IFTA allows commercial motor carriers to register in one state and have these tax assessments paid out to all participating areas according to their fair share.
IFTA has 58 member jurisdictions, including 48 states in the United States and 10 provinces in Canada.
IFTA is required for any motor vehicle with the following specifications:
- A vehicle with two axles and a gross vehicle weight above 26,000 pounds
- Those of any weight which has three or more axles
- Any combination of vehicles with a total gross vehicle weight or weight rating above 26,000 pounds
IFTA allows governments in the United States and Canada to receive their fair share of fuel use taxes.
ย
Motor Carriers that operate in multiple jurisdictions, must report the fuel use tax return each quarter with their base jurisdiction.
